For large sites, we sometimes create special sections (or "site-within-a-site") to give distinction to departments, centers, divisions, and other designated units. When a standalone site is combined with another site, it is often given the special section treatment.
Also to note, special sections may have an existing URL that can redirect to the new home base, like bequest.umn.edu goes to the Anatomy Bequest Program special section on the Medical School.
There are some extra steps to maintaining some aspects of special sections, so they are used sparingly.
A special section may have one or a combination of these elements:
- Design accent: Headline banner treatment applied
- Unit footer: Included above or instead of site-wide footer; includes design accent
- Focused navigation: Navigation for other sections drops off
